"Free Nelson Mandela" is more than just the best Afro-pop any British band has ever played — it's a single with both a conscience and a cause, and any listener with either ought to get a copy. As for the rest of the album, though it's not as incandescently melodic as the single, its audacious variety and surprisingly supple musicality demonstrate just how much Jerry Dammers & company have grown since the ska craze.
