Naming Conventions for Images
If we use a verbose naming convention such as:
- 1977_My_Aim_Is_True_Ryko_album_cover_large.jpg, or
- 1999-12-19_New_York_Town_Hall_concert_01_small_Dave_Weil.jpg",
it should make the wiki search engine easier to use.
With this naming convention, one could easily search on:
- all images from 1977
- all album covers
- large album covers
- all images with "My Aim Is True" (albums, buttons, poster, etc).
- all concert photos from New York
- all concert photos from 1999
- all photos by Dave Weil
- etc.
Well... I just discovered that we can embed any number of search terms with the image, so putting the searches terms in the image name is unnecesary. We may as well stay with the names as they are on the Home Page.
- Maybe it is a good idea to have a standard for the info to include with the image though, so that we have consistency. We do need to have unique names though, and your original naming convention certainly addressed that. I thought it was pretty good actually, and I vote to keep it. - JohnE 01:13, 23 April 2006 (CDT)
- It did get a little unwieldy though. What about a compromise -- something between this:
1984-08-27 St Louis Kiel Auditorium concert Pete Thomas large Jonathon England.jpg
- and this:
St louis.840827 pete.jpg
- perhaps just:
1984-08-27 St Louis Pete large 01.jpg 1984-08-27 St Louis Pete large 02.jpg 1984-08-27 St Louis Pete small 01.jpg 1984-08-27 St Louis Pete small 02.jpg
- and for albums, we can go back to acronyms, and drop the year:
MAIT_UK_album_cover_small.jpg MAIT_UK_album_cover_large.jpg MAIT_UK_album_cover_thumb.jpg MAIT_UK_album_backcover_small.jpg MAIT_UK_album_backcover_large.jpg MAIT_UK_album_backcover_thumb.jpg MAIT_Ryko_album_cover_small.jpg MAIT_Ryko_album_cover_large.jpg MAIT_Ryko_album_cover_thumb.jpg

Since the wiki software treats spaces as underscores, so within the markup we can use spaces, and the wiki will convert them to underscores when it needs to, such as in urls and image names.
Image Sizes
Images should be loosely grouped into the following categories:
1. large - over 500x500px 2. small - 200x200px 3. thumb - 50x50px
-- Different sizes are not required to be stored, as MediaWiki generates these on the fly the first time it is displayed. --JohnE 15:07, 13 October 2006 (CDT)
Costello Albums
JohnH: I've made a few more mods to the Album naming convention in an attempt to cover every type of album-related art. The (version) would be optional. It could be USA, UK, Demon, Ryko, Rhino -- whereever an alternate exists. Feedback appreciated, here, or the Talk page.
