Elvis Costello & The Imposters with Laura Cantrell

Wednesday, Oct. 30

Jim Ridley

Work for today has been canceled by mayoral proclamation, and the parade begins at noon at the Country Music Hall of Fame. You got the memo, right? Considering the last two shows Costello put on at the Ryman—one ferociously electric, one unforgettably acoustic—no less a welcome is due. Supporting a blazing new album, When I Was Cruel, which proves “adult rock 'n’ roll” needn’t be an oxymoron, Costello arrives backed by “The Imposters”: two-thirds of the redoubtable Attractions, one-man orchestra Steve Nieve and ace drummer Pete Thomas, augmented by veteran bassist Davey Faragher. What to expect? Consult the just-released tour-memento Cruel Smile, which promises radically reworked faves (a dub-accented “Watching the Detectives/My Funny Valentine” medley), rejuvenated LP tracks (the bruising 1986 wonder “Uncomplicated”) and torrid versions of the new album’s “15 Petals” and “Spooky Girlfriend.” As if Costello’s marathon sets weren’t enough, his opening act is former Nashvillian Laura Cantrell, whose mission to save the souls of New Yorkers with heart-tugging honky-tonk seems to be going ahead of schedule.
