Dury & Costello charity team-up

NME

Ian Dury and Elvis Costello appear together on the same bill for the first time since they co-headlined the "Bunch Of Stiffs" package in 1977, when they take part in a special charity show at London Victoria Apollo on Monday, June 1.

Titled "Fundamental Frolics 1.6.81," it's described as a music and comedy revue, and among other artists appearing are Chas & Dave, Hot Gossip, Stephane Grappelli, Joan Collins and Rowan Atkinson with all the Not The Nine O'Clock News team, including Mel Smith who is also directing the show. All proceeds go to MENCAP, the National Society for Mentally Handicapped Children and Adults.

It's understood that the show "will incorporate work never before seen in public" — and this applies not only to comedy sketches, but also to new songs specially written by the likes of Dury and Costello. A pick-up group of top session musicians will be on hand, which means that neither Ian nor Elvis will bring along his regular backing hand.

A spokesman told NME that the artists will be integrated as much as possible, involving Costello singing with Mel Smith, and Dury working with Chas & Dave, among other novelties. Ticket prices range from £5 to £20, with the bulk at £10, and they go on sale tomorrow (Friday).
