New Elvis stakes claim to crown of The King

Mike Townsend

Extract:

In the midst of all this is a 22-year-old singer from England named Elvis Costello. At first glance, he appears to be just another Elvis exploiter. But underneath the 50s demeanor and the unfortunate adoption of Presley's first name, lurks one of the most brilliant and original rock 'n' roll minds of the seventies.

On his debut album. My Aim Is True (Columbia), Costello has taken the minimalist concept of "less is more" and come up with the most refreshing and appealing turn the British New Wave has taken yet. His basic rock arrangements are sparse and simple, there are no instrumental breaks, his melodies are singable and danceable, and his voice is as raw and sincere as anyone's in rock 'n' roll.

One king dies and another is about to be born.
