Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Newcastle City Hall

It was a difficult decision, but Elvis Costello won the day over a World Cup semi — and rightly so.

Back on tour with the Attractions, he revealed this was the 17th anniversary of their first ever gig.

The old team provided cohesion for new material like "Pony Street" and "Kinder Murder."

A liberal sprinkling of old favourites performed with genuine enthusiasm kept the crowd on their feet.

"Watching the Detectives" was the springboard for one of several three-song thrashes without pausing for breath, while Elvis was good enough to keep football fans up to date with Roberto Baggio's exploits.

All this, the poignant "Shipbuilding," plus an honourable mention for Alan Hansen was compensation for missing the match.

Four encores — including "Accidents Will Happen," "Alison" and "Pump It Up" — and out into the heat and home to catch the last 10 minutes. Brilliant.
