Taking Liberties

Elvis Costello

Steve Boyd

Where does this guy get off thinking he can release two albums in the same year? Each with 20 songs, no less. That's almost as many as Springsteen has released his entire career. Needless to say, that's just not done these days, except by certain talentless country artists with nothing new to sing about, and except, I suppose, by Elvis.

Costello shows his musical eclecticism in this impressive collection of rare tracks and B-sides from the Elvis files. He handles several pop styles, from country and western to Rodgers and Hart, each with his inimitable style which has influenced current trends more than any other single artist.

Like his recent album Get Happy, this one also contains 20 songs, but it contrasts anything Costello has done in the past in its diversity of styles. Though disjointed, Taking Liberties flows, and never ceases to maintain interest. Not only will die-hard Costello fans enjoy this, but its potpourri of musical forms should appeal to almost everyone.
