High Fidelity
Shelly Ridenour
He's been a poet, a pirate, and a straight-shooting icon. And with his new record, Elvis Costello proves he is forever true to the rhythm.
We've all seen him. The guy at the record store or the library. The one at Enid's in Brooklyn, or the Rainbow in Chicago or Lucky 13 in San Francisco. And of course at Elvis Costello concerts. He is of indeterminate age (25-40), clad in thrift-store highwaters and creepers (skinny tie optional). The one with the not-too spiky hair, the wash-out pallor, and, always, the glasses. Not thick-rimmed, squared-off Buddy Holly numbers mind you, these are over-sized, tear-drop shaped specs that take up near half his face. They are, best said, Elvis Costello glasses.
"It's when they bring the full-scale re-creation that it gets unnerving. It's disconcerting when someone stands right in front of the microphone and holds the pose from the cover of Get Happy or This Year's Model without blinking," Elvis Costello sighs.
