At a time when the music being released is either from aged artists who have long established their names or from the new generation of Punk Rockers, it is good to see a fresh face in the crowd. Who is this new kid on the block? Why it's Elvis Costello of course!
On his debut album My Aim Is True, Elvis proves that basic rock and roll riffs combined with imaginative lyrics can make for some good fun listening.
My Aim Is True is comprised of several short songs, any of which could be a hit single. These tunes are so catchy that after a couple of listenings you'll likely sing them all day,
Side one opens with an array of off beat early 60's style songs, "Welcome To My Working Week," "Miracle Man," "No Dancing," "Blame It On Cain," followed by, the single that was released off the album, "Alison" a mellow ballad about an old girlfriend. "Alison" is the one tune on the album that could bring Elvis fame.
"Sneaky Feeling" follows, a foot tapping, finger snapping tune which could easily make it as a single.
"Watching the Detectives" is next, by far the best song on the album, (It is the only song not on the import version.) A true reggae tune right from the opening drum beat.
Side two opens up with another favorite of Elvis fans, "The Angels Wanna Year My Red Shoes," another standout on the album that could have made it at 45 r.p.m. "Less Than Zero" follows, a satire on Nazism. "Mystery Dance" is a good imitation of another Elvis at his best. "Pay It Back," "I'm Not Angry," and "Waiting For The End Of The World" closes the album.
