My Aim Is True

Elvis Costello

Steve Spellicy

Elvis Costello, the New Waves quirkiest newcomer is also one of its most genuine artists. Although Costello's record company has sold him as the kid anyone can kick sand at, his music is no joke.

Among the several excellent tunes, two really stand out; "Alison" and "Watching the Detectives." The first is a subtle blend of emotions in both words and delivery. It is coyly sentimental.

"Watching the Detectives," a masterpiece, uses mixing techniques in which instruments fade in and out, while Costello coldly describes a girl who is more interested in T.V. heroes than in him. Tasteful. A former computer programmer, Costello's aim is true.
