New Costello songs are on flip side of discs

Pop Scene / United Feature Syndicate

Q: I've heard of a couple of new Elvis Costello songs on the radio lately that I can't find on any of his albums. One is "Girls Talk," and the other one is called "Getting Mighty Crowded." Can you tell me where they can be found and why they aren't on any LPs?
    — Edward Phillips, Houston, Texas

A: "Getting Mighty Crowded" is an old Van McCoy tune and can be found only as an import: It's on the flip side of Costello's "High Fidelity" single in Great Britain. "Girls Talk," a song written by Costello and done by both Linda Ronstadt and Dave Edmunds on recent albums, was just released in the United States, and you can get it on Costello's latest domestic single, "I Can't Stand Up (For Falling Down)." More than most artists, Elvis Costello has a habit of putting previously unreleased tunes on the B-sides of his English singles, which causes many headaches for American collectors who are into his music. His latest release in Great Britain is an EP (extended play) single featuring "New Amsterdam," a song from his latest LP, Get Happy, as well as three brand-new songs — "Dr. Luther's Assistant," "Ghost Train" and "Just a Memory." Import Costello singles can be found in many well-stocked record shops.
