Burt Bacharach, Elvis Costello to do benefit at Belly Up for San Luis Rey Downs fire victims

George Varga

Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriters Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello will perform at a Jan. 17 benefit concert at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach that is being billed as “An Evening of Music To Support the Victims of the Fire at San Luis Rey Downs Training Center.”

Bacharach is a longtime racing fan whose horses have raced at Del Mar. For years, he has lived close to the race track there for part of each summer.

The Dec. 7 Lilac Fire, which swept through San Luis Rey Downs Training Center, killed 46 horses. It also seriously injured several of the horses’ caregivers. All proceeds from the Jan. 17 concert will go to the California Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Foundation and the California Retirement Management Account.

“Horses and horse racing have given me nothing but pleasure for the last half-century,” Bacharach said in a statement released Thursday afternoon by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

“The horrible circumstances around the San Luis Rey Downs fire cry out for aid in so many ways. This is my way of giving back to the horse community.“

Bacharach will be joined for part of his headlining benefit concert at the Belly Up by Costello, with whom he recorded the Grammy Award-winning 1998 album, “Painted From Memory.”

Actress Bo Derek will serve as master of ceremonies for the evening. She is a former California Horse Racing Board commissioner. Oscar-winning actress Anjelica Huston will join Derek to auction off a number of items at the concert, including the opportunity to sing the Bacharach- and Hal David-penned hit “Close To You” that night with Bacharach during his Belly Up performance.

Bacharach and his band have performed at the Belly Up twice before, in 2011 and 2016, when he appeared for two consecutive nights. All three shows sold out.

Attendance for the Jan. 17 benefit will be limited to 400 in the 600-capacity club, which next year will celebrate its 44th anniversary. While most Belly Up shows are general admission, with a combination of seats and standing room, the January benefit concert will be an all-seated event.

General admission tickets are priced at a minimum donation of $250 each (plus service charges), while reserved loft seats require a minimum donation of $450 each (plus service charges). Seats in the first three rows are priced at $1,000 each and will include a post-concert champagne reception with Bacharach.

An online pre-sale for “horsemen and horse racing fans” began late Wednesday afternoon. An online pre-sale for Belly Up VIP members will begin 9 a.m. Thursday (for which you can sign up, at no cost, on the Belly Up website).

Ticket sales to the general public will begin Friday at noon at the Belly Up website and box office in Solana Beach, and by phone at (858) 481-8140.
