Eccentric takes of Costello
Joel Selvin
Elvis Costello / Taking Liberties
Throw away those singles you bought from the hip neighborhood record boutique with all those Elvis Costello B-sides that never appeared on his albums. His fifth album is an eccentric collection of B-sides and unreleased takes, spanning his entire career. The prolific Costello left some gems to be discovered amidst the slag. Some of the songs will be familiar from his concert repertoire ("Watching the Detectives," "I Don't Want to Go to Chelsea") and some will be familiar from versions by other people, such as Dave Edmunds ("Girls Talk"), Linda Ronstadt ("Talking in the Dark") and George Jones ("Stranger in the House"). In addition to various American and English B-sides and previously unheard tracks, the album contains an alternate take of "Clowntime Is Over" and "Crawling to the USA" from the soundtrack to Americathon. Despite its mish-mash beginnings, the album has a lively feel that pervades virtually every cut and reveals Costello's talents in the broadest spectrum yet.
