ELVIS COSTELLO Barrowland, Glasgow, October 6

This was car crash rock 'n' roll with Costello going for the jugular straight away with How to be Dumb.

Forget the Radio 2, pipe and slippers Status Quo comfort zone, Costello is still producing songs as pertinent, punchy and poetic as he was when outpunking the Sex Pistols.

New album Delivery Man is his best in years. The title track is dark, brooding and sleazy, while the single Monkey To Man proves stadium rock behemoths don't have the monopoly on protest songs.

Classics such as Radio Radio, Oliver's Army, Pump it Up and Uncomplicated show punk's eternal belligerence is here to stay
