Elvis Costello goes full throttle on Seattle
Jason A. Miller
Last Thursday, Elvis Costello shook up the Paramount Theatre like it hasn't been shaken in a long time. He emerged from backstage, grabbed a guitar and lit into "Blue Chair." He followed that up by leading a hand clapping, toe tapping, booty shaking, arms swaying version of "Uncomplicated." The mixed crowd of urban hipsters and older fans erupted. Elvis Costello had arrived in Seattle and he wasn't going anywhere for a long, long time.
As the almost two hour show continued he mixed songs from his new album The Delivery Man and classic Costello. It was the latter that re-energized the crowd. "I Don't Wanna Go To Chelsea" and "When I Was Cruel Number 2" had the audience jumping out of their seats and dancing. Elvis Costello was friendly and fun as he managed to joke a little with his tight scheduled show. He didn't even give you a chance to catch your breath. He just kept switching out guitars and keeping the vibe flowing.
The last 20 minutes of the show turned the concert into a command performance. After sitting on the edge of the stage to sing "Alison" mixed with the classic Presley song "Suspicious Minds," Costello walked into the crowd to sing "Almost Blue." Everyone was on their feet and watching as he walked through the front rows. But the showstopper of the evening was "Why Don't You Love Me (Like You Used To Do)?" He stepped back from the mic and the entire theatre was dead silent as he continued to sing. It was one of the most moving moments of my concert happenings this year. Simply brilliant.
