Deep Dark Truthful Mirror: Elvis Costello Compiles “Unfaithful Music and Soundtrack Album

Mike Duquette

“Every day I write the book,” sang Elvis Costello on his first U.S. Top 40 hit, and this year he is indeed writing one. The iconoclastic British rocker, who’s chased his muse through the most diverse of places, from punk to bluegrass, will let it all out in prose on the hotly anticipated memoir Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink.

And now, Universal Music Enterprises, the home base for Elvis’ catalogue for nearly a decade (following stints at Rykodisc/Demon in the 1990s and Warner Bros./Rhino in the 1990s and 2000s), will issue a companion album to the book, curated by Costello himself and featuring hits, favorites and some unreleased material.

Choosing songs that “offer the deepest emotional connection to the themes and stories in his book,” Unfaithful Music & Soundtrack Album non-chronologically spans his entire recorded discography, from 1977’s My Aim is True to 2013’s Wise Up Ghost, his collaboration album with hip-hop group The Roots.

It wouldn’t be an Elvis Costello compilation (and there are many!) without some unreleased, archival material. Unfaithful Music & Soundtrack Album features two tracks from the vault: “Arpil 5th,” written and recorded with Rosanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson and John Leventhal; and “I Can’t Turn It Off,” accredited to “D.P. Costello” (Declan Patrick MacManus, of course, being Costello’s real name), an early recording from 1975.

The album closes with three “audio book sketches,” none of which appear in the book proper, and features a 28-page book of lyrics and rare photographs, including some from Costello’s personal family collection.

Unfaithful Music & Soundtrack Album will be available October 9, ahead of the book’s October 13 publication date. Here’s the full track list!
