Spandau Bully: In an otherwise amiable interview on the Mike Read show on Radio One on Tuesday, Elvis Costello took a hefty swipe at Spandau Ballet.
"Passionless... camp... horrible... Mario Lanza vocals..." was just some of the abuse heaped on their coiffeured heads by 'ol foureyes, who said the Spandex boys had taken all the worst elements of Diamond Dogs-period Bowie.
Elvis voiced the fear that "All the 11-year-old kids who've been told that this is the thing to listen to will be corrupted... it's so rootless" — a gripe which caused Mr Read to suggest that Elvis was beginning to sound just like his dad.
On a more positive note, EC raved about the new Gary Glitter single, ditto recent 45s by Donna Summer and Robert Palmer, and named his fave bands as Squeeze, UB40, Clash ("I'm still trying to wade through their album"), Adam And The Ants and Bow Wow Wow and gave a special plug to rediscovered Fifties singers Julie London and Janice Martin.
