Costello calls a truce

Sounds

Elvis Costello's legal battle with Warner Brothers was unexpectedly resolved last week with the announcement of a licensing agreement between Costello's record company F-Beat and WEA.

The immediate effect of this is that Costello's single, "I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down," is released on February 8 and his fourth album, as yet untitled, will be out a week later. The album will contain 20 tracks, including the old Merseybeats' classic "I Stand Accused."

After the settlement both sides were quick to issue statements covering up any rifts that innocent bystanders might have imagined to exist between them. WEA boss John Fruin said: "I'm absolutely delighted to have resolved the business differences with Jake Riviera (Costello's manager), Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe. On a personal level I felt we had never been in dispute at all and it is especially good to be back in business with Andrew Lauder, now under the F-Beat banner. I look forward to immediate and continuing huge success."

For the other side Andrew Lauder replied: "I am more than pleased to be able to finally get a record in the shops without further delay and, after all is said and done, business is business."

Kremlinologists (those versed in reading between the lines of bland press communiques) are still studying those statements for implications, but it seems that both sides will continue to eye each other warily for a while. But for Costello it must be a relief to be able to release his new album to coincide with his British tour, dates for which were announced two weeks ago. All the signs were that the case could have dragged on for several months, possibly even a year, which would have seriously hampered Costello's career.
