This Year's Model
Elvis Costello
Steve Bishop
This Year's Model relates to the early '60s sound with heavy accent on a Vox-type organ. Costello's first album, My Aim Is True, contains catchier tunes than his newest and second release, except for the cuts, "Radio, Radio" and "No Action."
This Year's Model is more of a "fun" album in comparison with My Aim Is True which contained some fairly meaningful lyrics.
Costello's style has not changed to any noticeable degree. His vocals don't seem to be quite as audible as on his first, but the heavily dominating organ, which is new to his style, makes up for this.
Costello, along with Nick Lowe, will be in concert May 26, at Dallas Convention Center Theatre.

Pure Pop For Now People
Nick Lowe
Steve Bishop
Nick Lowe, producer of Elvis Costello's two albums, now has his first solo album out. Although his album is much in the same style as Costello, Lowe is more versatile.
Lowe's music, a mix of late '50s and early '60s music, tends to be on the satirical side. "Muted By Reality" is a good example of this with lyrics like: "I heard they castrated Castro! They cut off everything he had..." But the most satirical song on the LP is "Roller's Show," a subtle cut to the Bay City Rollers.
"They Called It Rock" takes a look at the early days of this musical style and the critics' misjudgment of its popularity.
Nick Lowe, like Elvis Costello, creates purely enjoyable music, He has been able to produce material that is easy to listen to (i.e. easy to sing along with) without resorting to commercial tactics.
Nick Lowe will be in concert May 26 at the Dallas Convention Center Theatre along with his protege, Elvis Costello.
