Elvis' latest amalgamation of talent is splendid

Mark Arabbatzis

After sporting a beard and getting some help from blue grass, country & western musicians to help him in production of his new album, Elvis Costello released King of America. Normally, Elvis changes his style drastically after each album to try to go into new directions and diversify his musical talent, and he once again does so.

Goodbye Cruel World (Elvis' last release) was a more contemporary album and contained many more synthesizer and digitally influenced tracks. Once again, Elvis Costello goes full-tilt off that format with this country based album. Tracks to look for and hear are: "Don't let me be misunderstood," and "Jack of all Parades." Chances are though, that King of America will hit the mark with prior Elvis fans, but won't achieve such commercial success that previous tunes like "Only flame in town," "Everyday I write the book" and "Accidents will happen" had.

Joining Elvis on the album is Steve Nieve, who has appeared on several other releases, and T-bone Burnett, a country performer added to enhance the country sound. Listen to my session on Tuesday 4-6 on 91.7 WLFR to hear a cut or two off of Elvis' new album King in America or one of his older hits.
