Is there a need for the small images

I was wondering if there is a need to upload a small gif and a large jpg of the same image, such as the back cover for this page. If you just upload the larger jpg, when you want a small image of it, can't you just put in the wiki code to display as a thumb or display at 100px or 200px, or whatever is decided or needed.

I believe that MediaWiki will generate the thumb and save it the first time it is displayed, and thereafter use this thumb, and not have to regenerate it every time. I am not 100% sure of this though.

Then it would not be necessary to have the artwork section of this page, as the larger image can be accessed from the thumb image.

There is the difference between the small front cover image which does not include the back page including the song list. Not sure what to do here. It may be needed to upload larger images of both of these to allow freedom to download whichever is required. Alternatively you could take the hard-nosed view and say that the one with the song list includes the other one, and people could print it out and throw away the bit they didn't want, or just edit the jpg to remove the song part. Neither of these doesn't sounds all that caring though. I guess I am in favourite of making both available in this case then.

What are your thoughts on this? --JohnE 17:20, 16 June 2006 (CDT)

  • At first I was going to use only the large images, but I thought you or someone might want all images of all sizes preserved. But I agree with your ideas, and the page would probably look better without the small images. -- JohnH
