Elvis Costello delivered a fierce opening set, proving that you don't need more than an acoustic guitar and some of the best songs ever written.

He opened with "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes" and never slowed down, attacking classics such as "Radio Radio" and "Radio Sweetheart." An unexpected highlight was a devastating "Either Side of the Same Town," Costello's take on Southern soul. He sang the song about lost love and dark ends of the street with a heart-rending passion.

Costello's biggest surprise was "New Amsterdam," from his "Get Happy" album. Midway through, he segued into The Beatles' "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," making the song's reference to Liverpool resonate powerfully.
