Lyrics

Big Chief:

Instrumental

Tipitina:

Instrumental

The Olde Professor:

Thank you Lord

For this very special man

And thank you for letting me be around to see

One as great as he

Thank you Lord

'Twas in your plan I trust

He was sent for few of us

So now that he's gone his way

What can I say

I remember Tuts, 'Fess and me

Oh and the pianos three(?)

Oh what fun we had

How his presence filled the air everywhere

Thank you Lord

'Twas in the plan I trust

He was sent for few of us

So now that he's gone his way

What can I say

But thank you Lord

For Professor Longhair

Credits

Allen Toussaint - piano, vocal

Notes

Not really an Elvis Costello performance at all, Big Chief Medley was a solo spotlight for Allen Toussaint during The River In Reverse tour. A live performance from 2006-07-03 is included on the Hot As A Pistol, Keen As A Blade DVD.

The exact content of the medley varied from show to show. Some performances included Tipitina And Me (the minor-key variation of Tipitina which Toussaint recorded for the 2005 album Our New Orleans: A Benefit Album For The Gulf Coast and Elvis reworked into Ascension Day). Some performances did not include The Olde Professor.

The medley was identified as "Big Chief Variations" on setlists during The River In Reverse tour.
