There seems to be a curious system to Elvis Costello's album releases: masterpiece, holding pattern, masterpiece, holding pattern, etc., etc. And Punch The Clock definitely sees old El hovering around, waiting for that next big IDEA. If last year's Imperial Bedroom had the critics swooning, this new slab of vinyl will only see them fidgeting in the wings. Yep, even if P the C has begun to churn out some genuine hits for the Boy Wonder, it holds few surprises and is even a bit cutesy, what with Costello's newfound penchant for nursery-rhyme melodies, brassed-up backgrounds and female chorus. Hoo boy! What will the folks at Rolling Stone do? Slaver or snicker? Probably throw the I Ching and then decide if Elvis is really a genius. But for my pennies, Costello is quite simply the best songwriter around — regardless of the fact that every album he puts out isn't an earth-shattering event. Punch The Clock is not Armed Forces, Get Happy or Imperial Bedroom, but then again, it fits quite nicely on the stack with This Year's Model, Taking Liberties and Trust. So you get the picture, huh? No harm in waiting for the next big one....
