Elvis Costello puts his heart on new sleeve

Greg Quill

Not that Elvis Costello, 34, doesn't have time for love. In fact, he could be accused of loving too intensely. In town with his second wife, singer Cait O'Riordan, an original member of Irish folk-punk outfit The Pogues, Costello plies his trade almost exclusively in song — stories about the abuse and misuse of love.

Costello, who made an earnest attempt a couple of years ago to resurrect his given name, Declan MacManus, but recently decided to make his nom-de-vinyl legal and official, is nothing if not an expert rock 'n' roll raconteur with linguistic skills and a vocabulary that often transcend both the base nature of rock music and the understanding of his audience.

"Though capital punishment is still banned in Britain, every now and then the issue crops up," Costello said. "People need to be reminded."
