Veronica

Single from the album Spike

From "Alison" to "Veronica," Elvis Costello's songs have at times seemed like the last bastion of intelligence in the mainstream music industry. With caustic wit in overdrive, his last couple of albums have been full of scathing, sarcastic social criticism. But for me, Costello's best songs have been his "people songs," combining bitterness, sadness and tenderness in tales of ex-lovers and friends. Veronica is such a song, spoilt only by an indecipherable chorus. Coming from someone alleged to be the best songwriter in the English language (1 can almost believe it) it would seem reasonable to expect to be able to understand the words. But the music almost makes up for it, with a fifties-esque drum track, Costello's unique vocals, and a whistleable tune.
