Elvis Costello

Unicorn Times

While everybody in rock claims to be something new and unique, Elvis Costello is one of the few artists who have proven possession of these qualities. He began as the ultimate angry young man, snarling his way into this country by declaring his intentions to bite the hand that feeds him. He was convincing and exciting, creating a couple of LPs that have so far stood the test of time admirably.

Next, he decided to get happy, but still had his angry young spectre to contend with. Over the years the music has gotten more serious and his songwriting has been dipping more into the classics for inspiration and now has gained some of the respect he deserves. His last appearance in town was a stunning solo acoustic show at DAR Constitution Hall. With one of the best back up bands in the world, the Attractions, Costello is now in a category of his own. See them at Merriweather.

Opening the show will be Nick Lowe, the prince of pure pop, with his new ensemble, the Cowboy Outfit.

Free Nelson Mandela

The Special AKA

In the Studio with the Special AKA is the best new wave album I've heard this year, and this song, produced by Elvis Costello, is its centerpiece. Jerry Dammers, who founded the Specials, here provides the definitive (and final?) statement of the 2-tone ska movement. Nelson Mandela is a black leader who has spent the last 21 years in a South African prison, and the song thus makes a strong political statement. And it's also an absolutely authentic reading of the original Jamaican ska style.
