Pump It Up

Bruce Rosenstein

Extract:

Radar Records has released a new Elvis Costello single, "Pump It Up," but the interest is in the b-side, a previously unreleased cut, "Big Tears." Playing guitar on this is Mick Jones of The Clash.

Nick Lowe's new Radar single is "Little Hitler," but the b-side, "Cruel To Be Kind," has never been issued before. It is, in fact, a Brinsley Schwarz recording written and sung by Lowe, and done as a demo in September, 1974, six months before the band split up. The song also appears on a U.S. promotional disc jointly done by Columbia and Capitol to promote the Costello/Lowe/Mink DeVille tour of the States.

Stiff is releasing a specially priced, 15 cut album called The Legend Of Mickey Jupp. Jupp is a veteran British rocker from Southend—home of the Feelgoods, Kursaals and Hot Rods — who formed the band Legend in the late sixties. The tracks on this set come from their two obscure lps, one of which was released here on Bell. Jupp recently formed a new band and toured Britain with Elvis Costello. He's currently signed to UK Arista, and there is a good possibility that Nick Lowe will produce his next album.
