Elvis Costello is coming.
He's not exactly unfamiliar, as his first album My Aim is True was the biggest selling import in America and later became the first new wave album to crack the U.S. top fifty. Costello's follow up album, This Year's Model has been selling even faster.
Elvis Costello, an under-fed Buddy Holly look alike, was raised in Liverpool. Strange new things in rock music are always coming out of England, and Costello is no exception. He's strange, daring, and exciting. It's hard to fit him into any mold as he's neither punk, nor average rock and roll.
Costello is known for his angry rock and roll. He sings like a machine gun going off in blasts. Somehow he has managed to keep his integrity throughout his rise to fame.
His This Year's Model is pure Elvis, with, if anything, even more blasting honesty than his first LP. Costello and his back-up band, The Attractions, manage to play with such fear and anger that you can overlook the influences in their sound.
Elvis, a one time computer operator, is now a musician who is anything but precisely scientific. He rocks, and lets the raw
edges show through.
His repertoire ranges from the bitingly gritty "Less Than Zero" to the quick paced "Mystery Dance" that reminds one of Chuck Berry.
Through all of his songs, a clenched teeth kind of rock pervades. While he's singing "I'm Not Angry" you're more than aware that he's angry.
Costello fills his music with such energy, that you can be sure you won't sit still in your seats when he comes to Calgary.
The opening act will be The Wives, a Canadian punk band.
The show is being held at the Jubilee Auditorium on Monday, Nov. 13 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are plentiful.
