Fatal attraction

Alex Reeve

Elvis Costello burst onto the music scene in 1977 with a succession of amphetamine-fueled three minute classics that quickly established his formidable reputation.

Songs like "Watching the Detectives" and "(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea" displayed a startling lyrical sophistication combined with a keen understanding of the dynamics of brilliant pop. Last year saw Elvis reunited with The Attractions for a rapturously received American tour and the magnificent Brutal Youth album.

The new songs show a return to the energetic form that first brought the band to prominence and the group scored a top twenty hit with the single "Sulky Girl." Costello continues to surprise and entertain with his unique cocktail of melody vitriol and wit whilst most of his contemporaries have drifted into bland, MTV-friendly mediocrity.

Rivaled only by Paul Weller and Morrissey, he has consistently been one of the most incisive chroniclers of life in England at the end of the century.

Catch Elvis Costello at the LCR and enjoy an evening in the company of a man who has been on kissing terms with genius for the best part of eighteen years.
