The biggest attraction

Frank Doolin

With the New Year well under way it is heartening to note that the trend, Of the last couple of years — bringing "big names" acts to Ireland — is continuing unabated.

Already an impressive array of international artists have been lined up to perform at various venues around the country, while speculation increases that David Bowie might finally be persuaded to display his mercurial talents on an Irish stage.

Of the gigs lined up over the next month or so the one that is creating the most excitement must be the return to the National Stadium of Elvis Costello and the Attractions.

In snow-bound January of last year Costello performed before an enthusiastic and ecstatic audience what could be regarded as the greatest rock concert ever seen on these shores, and that includes the Stones' extravaganza at Slane and Van Morrison's party in the Gaiety.

Since the release of his first album My Aim is True, six years ago Costello has developed and matured into one of the most original and exciting songwriters of the post-Punk era.

Unlike most of the Punks, who have either disappeared or remained static, Elvis Costello has worked on the development of his music to such a point where he can be compared with other great British songwriters like John Lennon and Ray Davies.

Over the years Costello's music has grown rapidly, from the stark black and white world of the early albums to the richly textured technicolour of last year's magnificent Imperial Bedroom set.

What has placed Elvis Costello head and shoulders above the rest of his contemporaries is his genuine artist's ability to take an ordinary situation and turn it into something special.

Working lyrically with the ordinary and musically with the innovative Costello has produced a body of work that captures perfectly both his and the listener's rock 'n' roll heart.

Contained within the music of Elvis Costello are the contrasting emotions of human nature and through them the stark facts of everyday life.

While working in a business oft ruled by hype Costello has studiously avoided the cliches of the rock world. In terms of image and personality he is closer to the people who buy his records than to the publicity mad sharks of what can be an ugly and dishonest industry.

However, despite recoiling from the media Costello has remained in constant touch with the people who really matter — the audience.

During February Irish audiences will once again have an opportunity to see one of rock music's most enigmatic and original artists. No doubt, a splendid time is in store for all.
