A tour that taught humility

The Observer-Reporter

Extract:

Billy Connolly started singing because he couldn't figure out how to end his comedy routines.

He says he started show business to support a hippie life.

This year, the Scot, who talks In a cheery manner, performed in the United States for six weeks. "I started, opening for Manhattan Transfer," Connolly says. "I went with Elvis Costello, where I bombed completely in St. Louis. It was a poor audience. It was a great experience.

"I joined Dr. Hook and had the time of my life. I got a standing ovation. You're very much a victim of the headliner and the type of audience he pulls.

"It was good for me, playing here, because I'm not famous here. It teaches me humility. I need an injection of humility every now and then. I think I get unbearable."
