Grammy nod for Elvis Costello's "45" is well deserved
John Swinconeck
Elvis Costello is back and loud with When I Was Cruel. The industry decided to give a nomination to Costello for Best Male Rock Performance for the single "45" off this album. Good for them. It's always gratifying when an artist is deserving in their nomination.
"45" is a wonderful tribute to the endangered vinyl medium — a great mix of New Wave and modern punk. The industry did something right nominating this single.
"Spooky Girlfriend" is at once primitive and modern. "Tear Off Your Own Head (It's A Doll Revolution)" kicks butt with a driving bass line underscoring retro guitars and keyboards.
"Tart" has a unique quiet intensity, while "Dissolve" completely rocks out. It's a typical dichotomy for the 15 tracks on Cruel.
Yes sir, I like it.
