Taking Liberties

Elvis Costello

Robert Popkoff

That bespectacled little imp spurts out 20 more songs for uneasy digestion. Though nearly all have been available on British albums and singles, this marks their first appearance on an American album.

Substandard rejects? Wrong! "Big Tears" is one of Elvis' most impassioned performances. "Stranger in the House" is a classic country song of alienation and heartbreak. "Dr. Luther's Assistant" recalls Revolver era Beatles. Elvis even turns "My Funny Valentine" into an understated soul ballad.

Because these songs are from different periods, more variety is in evidence here, unveiling a clearer picture of Elvis Costello.
