Elvis Costello and Attractions to perform tomorrow night

Asbury Park Press

HOLMDEL TOWNSHIP — Elvis Costello and The Attractions will perform at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Garden State Arts Center, Garden State Parkway Exit 116. Remaining tickets are $10 lawn seats only.

Elvis Costello burst on the music scene in 1977 with the singles "Less Than Zero," "Alison" and "The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes."

The British singer-songwriter lost no time in making his musical mark in the United States. By the end of the year "Alison," and the album on which it appears, My Aim Is True were hits in this country.

"Watching the Detectives," another single from the album was a follow-up hit for Costello and his group, The Attractions (Steve Nieve on keyboards, Bruce Thomas on bass and drummer Pete Thomas).

Costello's subsequent albums, This Year's Model and particularly the 1979 Armed Forces were big sellers on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

His 1981 album, Almost Blue was a change of style for Costello. Recorded in Nashville, the album had a strong country influence, aided by the presence of pedal steel guitarist John McFee and producer Billy Sherrill.

In 1982, Costello changed direction again with a joint concert appearance (with The Attractions) with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Costello's other hits include "Accidents Will Happen," "(What's So Funny 'bout) Peace, Love and Understanding," "Girls Talk," "Man Out of Time" and "Everyday I Write the Book."
