My Aim Is True

Elvis Costello

Bill King

Briton Elvis Costello, recently here at the Capri, is supposed to represent what they are calling "new wave" music, supposedly the technically superior first cousin to punk rock.

If his first lp, My Aim Is True (Columbia JC 35037), is any example of the new wave, then I do not have high hopes for our musical future.

However, I don't think there is anything "new wave" about Costello. His music is simple, basic late 1950s-early 1960s rock 'n' roll, with the only difference being his interesting (though hard to understand) lyrics.

There's nothing new here, and it isn't even performed well, with Costello's voice being anything but pleasing, and the instrumental work being, at times, as amateurish as anything you'll hear at a junior high talent show.

Costello has said he hates "bands concerned with any kind of instrumental virtuosity" and he shows it on this album.
