Chastain shows give fans the unexpected

Richard L. Eldredge

Extract:

On Sunday night, meanwhile, Elvis Costello demonstrated that his marriage to jazz babe Diana Krall is agreeing with him. The bespectacled hipster brought the Chastain crowd to its feet more than once as he barreled through a setlist that mixed newer songs ("Monkey to Man") with crowd-pleasing classics ("Alison," "Pump It Up" and "Everyday I Write the Book"). Costello knows a thing or two about engaging an audience — even a chatty one —and enlisted its aid in a falsetto-laced cover of Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "You've Really Got a Hold on Me." All of which isn't to say he didn't notice that he had a little competition. Midway through his encore with Emmylou Harris (who also joined him for the middle portion of the show), he told the crowd he had a question for them. A very "serious" question: "Did you get enough to eat?"

Anyone still hungry, he joked, should stop by Elvis & Emmylou's Tofu Stand.
