Drei Stunden im Bann von Elvis Costello
Mit Songs über Liebe und Verrat ("darüber habe ich mehr als 400 Songs geschrieben") begeisterte Elvis Costello bei seinem Berliner Gastspiel.

Elvis Costello hüpft ins Rampenlicht, im schwarzen Anzug, mit der obligatorischen Hornbrille und einem weißen Hut, der ihn angenehm sommerlich wirken lässt. Costello (60) ist ein Original, ein Musik-Tausendsassa: Der Brite machte Ende der 70er intellektuellen Punk, dann New Wave, Rock’n’Roll, Funk, Blues, Jazz, Streichquartett, Piano-Balladen und Orchestersuiten für Shakespeare-Stücke – und alles hat er nach Berlin zu seiner Solo-Show mitgebracht.
„Ich habe ein Thema für den heutigen Abend gewählt“, verkündet er dem ausverkauften Admiralspalast. „Es geht um Liebe und Verrat!“ Kurze Pause. „Darüber habe ich über 400 Songs geschrieben!“ Eine Woche könnte der smarte Brite so durchspielen, aber er belässt es bei „nur“ knapp drei Stunden. 20 Songs hat das Hauptset, die erste Zugabe (zu der er die Vorband Larkin Poe auf die Bühne holt) besteht aus acht Liedern – so viel spielen andere Bands als Hauptset! Dann kommen nochmal sechs Songs, dann nochmal zwei. Elvis Costello meint es wirklich gut mit seinen Fans!
Sieben akustische Gitarren, eine E-Gitarre und ein Klavier hat er mitgebracht, wechselt ständig Instrument und Stimmung, aber das hat er eben auch drauf: Mit Stimme und Begleitung wechselt er zwischen punkig-laut (etwa bei „Watching the Detectives“) und sanftmütig-leise (besonders umjubelt: sein Hit „She“). Schon bei zweiten Song „Radio Show“ animiert er das Publikum zum Mitsingen, bedankt sich später mit Anekdoten aus seinem Leben, etwa, dass er bei seinem allerersten Auftritt in einem Pub seine falsch gestimmte Gitarre leise drehte und um so wilder posierte – „das war das Konzert meines Lebens!“
Zu den letzten Zugaben setzt sich Costello zunächst ans Piano, holt dann die E-Gitarre raus, und da hält es keinen mehr auf den Sitzen: Mit stehenden Ovationen feiert der Admiralspalast Elvis Costello. Seinen besten Moment hat er aber, als er sich demonstrativ neben das Mikrophon stellt und unverstärkt singt. Und der Admiralspalast ist still. Gänsehaut!

Seven acoustic guitar, an electric guitar and a piano he brought, constantly changing instrument and mood, but he has also just better: with voice and accompaniment, he alternates between punk-loud (as in "Watching the Detectives") and gentle -leise (particularly acclaimed: his hit "She"). Even with the second song "Radio Show" he animated the audience to sing along, thanks later with anecdotes from his life, as he tuned his guitar wrong quietly turned in his first ever appearance in a pub and the wilder posed - "that was the concert of my life! "
For the last encores, Costello is first the piano, then picks up the guitar out, and since it holds no more on the seats: With standing ovations the Admiralty Elvis Costello celebrates. But he has his best moment, as he pointedly stands next to the microphone and unreinforced sings. And the Admiralty is still. Goosebumps!
