Singers Costello and Krall wed

BBC News

Singer-songwriter Elvis Costello has married jazz artist Diana Krall in a ceremony at Elton John's UK mansion.

About 150 guests, including Sir Paul McCartney, attended the wedding which took place last weekend.

Costello's spokesman confirmed "the wedding was a private event with close friends and family in attendance".

It is the first marriage for Krall, 39, and the third for 49-year-old Costello. The couple, who live in New York, have been together for a year.

Other guests, who were sworn to secrecy, included Canada's consul general to New York, Pamela Wallin. Krall grew up near Vancouver, and the newly-weds have a second home on Vancouver Island.

Costello's previous two marriages ended in divorce, and in November last year it was announced he had split from former Pogues singer Cait O'Riordan after 16 years of marriage.

Krall is one of the most highly acclaimed mainstream jazz vocalists to have emerged in recent years.

She made her breakthrough with the Grammy-nominated 1996 album All For You, and has since won Grammys for 1999's When I Look Into Your Eyes and her Live in Paris album recorded in 2001.

Merseyside-born Costello, born Declan MacManus, emerged on the back of the late 1970s UK punk rock movement with his band The Attractions, recording a string of successful albums including This Year's Model, Armed Forces and Get Happy.

Regarded as one of Britain's most influential songwriters, his style has progressed away from rock music to a more classically-influenced sound.

His latest release, North, follows recent collaborations with Burt Bacharach, Anne Sofie von Otter and the Brodsky Quartet.
