New Elvis gains popular acclaim

William D. Laffler / United Press International

What's in a name? Fame, maybe, if the name is Elvis.

Shortly after the death of Elvis Presley, a rash of imitators appeared on the skin of rock and pop.

And then came along a man with the same first name. Elvis Costello. But he had something to offer and his first two albums made the charts of best-selling records.

And now a third album, Armed Forces, by Elvis Costello and The Attractions (Columbia 35709), is convincing testimony that this Elvis is no fluke.

The album also includes a bonus EP disc, Elvis Costello Live at Hollywood High. The album and the EP contain separate versions of "Accidents Will Happen," with the faster tempo on the LP.

As usual Costello gets good backing from The Attractions.

Among the better — that means really good — numbers are "Watching the Detectives," "Moods for Moderns," "Two Little Hitlers" and "Party Girl."

As for the real Elvis, he is still in great demand. The latest posthumous album, Elvis — A Canadian Trip (RCA KKL1-7065) was recorded during Elvis' concerts north of the border in 1957, only a couple of years after he first appeared upon and electrified the scene.

At that time Elvis was still in the process of building his image and his efforts delighted the Canadians.
