Wenn der Bürgermeister das erfährt, wird er den Namen Costello gleich in sein goldenes Büchlein eintragen, das er auch auf Reisen an seinem Herzen trägt. Im Booklet seiner neuen DVD "Hot As A Pistol, Keen As A Blade" stellt Elvis Costello eine Liste von Städten zusammen, in denen es sich seiner Meinung nach lohnt, ein Popkonzert zu filmen. Seine Top Ten wird angeführt von San Francisco, Nashville und New York. Was soll man dazu sagen. "London? Du machst Witze. Liverpool? Gut, vielleicht." Und jetzt kommt's: Amsterdam und BERLIN hält er für durchaus geeignet. Aufgenommen wurde sein Konzert dann allerdings beim Jazz Festival in Montreal. Die kanadische Stadt, schreibt Elvis Costello, wäre bei ihm nicht unter die ersten zwanzig gekommen. Dabei sind die Leute da so nett. Damit er sein geliebtes Berlin nicht zu sehr vermissen muss, haben ihn die Veranstalter in eine Art ICC verfrachtet. In den Sitzreihen vor der Bühne sind noch ein paar Plätze frei, da haben die Saalordner versagt. Aus dem bisherigen Verlauf der Menschheitsgeschichte wissen wir, dass Ereignisse, die unter ungünstigen Umständen beginnen oft einen herrlichen Verlauf nehmen. Costello braucht zirka dreißig Minuten, um die Zuhörer für seine Kunst zu erwärmen. Als dann ein Herr in Reihe 14 aufsteht und im Stehen applaudiert, ist es vollbracht. Am Ende, nach knapp zwei Stunden und 25 Songs, wird es eines der besten Konzerte gewesen sein, die Elvis Costello gespielt hat. Das sagt er selber und man darf es ihm glauben. Der eigentliche Held des Abends ist jedoch sein Comapgnon Allen Toussaint. Mit ihm hatte der englische Elvis im vergangenen Jahr in New Orleans eine wunderbare Platte eingespielt, die sie nun live vorstellten. Und mehr als das, denn der genialische Komponist und Arrangeur Toussaint, den man wirklich Legende nennen kann - sein "Pain In My Heart" und "Fortune Teller" wurde von den blutjungen Stones gecovert - war von Costello gebeten worden, ein paar seiner Standards mit Bläsersätzen aufzuhelfen. So wie es Toussaint vor mehr als dreißig Jahren für The Band und deren kanonisches Live-Album "Rock Of Ages" schon einmal gelungen war. Geschichte wiederholt sich nicht, aber manchmal eben doch. Über elegant synkopierte Grooves legt Toussaint die Bläserei seines Blechquartetts, vom Flügel aus veredelt er den Sound mit Pianolinien und er erlaubt es Costello auf seiner elektrischen Gitarre herumzuschrammeln, wie es ihm gefällt. Das alles klingt fantastisch, nur einmal verpufft die Blasmusik. Ausgerechnet bei "Watching The Detectives" will nun gar nichts passen. Dieses Arrangement hatte sich Costello leider selber ausgedacht.
