Elvis & Steve on Tour Again

Lonely World Tour Continues in the USA as Costello Debuts Ten New Songs

Mike Bodayle

ELVIS COSTELLO AND STEVE NIEVE CAME OUT FIGHTING for round two of their lonely World Tour in the USA. The duo again made believers out of anyone who felt that the first leg of their tour sounded somewhat familiar. Playing 23 shows from September 30 through October , the set lists (see page 19) covered a staggering 77 songs, 10 of which were new songs being heard for the first time. Prior to the opening show in San Francisco, Elvis started things off appearing on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in Los Angeles. he surprised everyone by delivering "45," a song he wrote in honor of his recent birthday that he described as "the story of my life in three minutes," And the surprises would continue. tour opened (as would most nights) with Elvis in the dark pounding his electric guitar to Steve 's rhythmic accompaniment on the new "Alibi Factory ".

There were also two new songs from a work-in-progress entitled The Deliveryman, which at this point is said to be several thematically- linked songs, the final result of which is yet undecided. Comments from Elvis have indicated that it could perhaps be a concept album with even other vocalists involved. Centered around three women and "the things they wish for from the deliveryman," EC is also working on a related story and even read from it during the October 27 show at the hallowed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

On this leg of the tour, Elvis visited some cities that have not seen him in more than a decade. Appreciative fans were also rewarded with other premieres such as "Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter" (co-wntten with another famed Brill Building songwriter, Carole King) Louisville and the two songs Elvis has written for his upcoming movie role in Prison Story in Indianapolis (see On the Beat).

There were also two surprise guest appearances in the USA. Bassist Greg Cohen (who played on both "My Mood Swings" and Painted From Memory) made the group a trio when he played stand-up bass for four songs with Elvis and Steve at the second Beacon Theater show in New York City. And on the penultimate night of the tour, local area resident Roger McGuinn joined Costello and Nieve for four songs at the Hard Rock Live in Orlando, Florida.

And things were also not set to end after the Halloween night show in Sunrise, Florida as the boys were to kick off 16 November - December dates throughout the United Kingdom before wrapping things up with two shows in Japan.

Still working hard at keeping pace with Costello & Nieve's never-ending activities, in this issue, Beyond Belief concludes its comprehensive coverage of the first part of the Lonely World Tour with readers' reports from the North American concerts and the European festivals, as well as a report on the Woodstock performance, Details of the tour's second part can be found on pages 18-19 including a brief synopsis of the new material written by "Mr. A to Z," Dave Farr.
