Elvis Costello plans Bozeman stop

Gazette Staff

Alternative rocker Elvis Costello & The Imposters will perform at Bozeman's Valley Ice Garden arena April 12.

Reserved tickets are $35 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the Bravo Productions show are available in Bozeman at the Valley Ice Garden, Grateful Shed, Fieldhouse Box Office, Strand Union Building, Borders Books, Cactus Records, or online at ticketswest.com

When Costello's first record was released in 1977, his bristling cynicism and anger linked him with the punk and new wave explosion. Costello has always borrowed from all different styles of music, including country, Tin Pan Alley pop, reggae and rock. He is known for his fiercely literate lyrics.

Costello's tour is in support of his latest release The Delivery Man on Lost Highway Records. The 2004 release draws on deep American musical roots and tracks range from the ferocious opener, "Button My Lip," which speaks in the voice of a desperate man on the verge of committing a terrible crime, to the tender song "The Scarlet Tide," referred to by Costello's co-composer T Bone Burnett as an "anti-fear song."

Costello has been nominated for four Grammy Awards, including Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Let's Misbehave" and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group for "Monkey to Man."

"Proper rock 'n' roll should swing," Costello said. "If anybody ever calls me a 'rock musician,' I take issue with it and I say I play rock 'n' roll music. A rock just lies in the dirt and has no life in it.

"Whatever you want to call it, we were looking for that vanishing point in the road where country, rock 'n' roll and soul music all meet. I believe we may have found it," he said.
