I loved the '80s. Big hair, little embroidered alligators, John Hughes films — not to mention the music. I know we all have to grow up sometime and I've tried. I really have. But, I'll admit I was excited to hear the other Elvis was coming out with a new CD, ''The Delivery Man''.
Back in high school, I loved Elvis Costello almost as much as I loved my Doc Martens. But that was years ago. What if I had outgrown him and his music? I love "Alison" and "Peace, Love and Understanding," but is that enough? By the sound of his show last Wednesday in Boise, Elvis has grown up too, and he reminded us all why he is worthy of his decades of success. The show was, in one word, brilliant. And the CD is probably one of the best things I've heard in a long time. The album's lyrics reference the other Elvis, Jesus, and Cain and Abel laid over soft cymbals, a Wurlitzer organ and an omnichord. No kid stuff there. So maybe I'll never grow up completely­­ — I still love my Doc Martens and I love Elvis Costello now more than ever.
