Two weeks ago I saw Elvis Costello at Shea's on Thursday, and the Police at Harvey and Corky's on Sunday.
Elvis and the Attractions were great, and so were the Rubinoos, who opened the show. They were fun because they jumped around a lot and played neat songs like "I Think We're Alone Now" by the Shondells.
Elvis looked great in his black-and-white checkerboard suitcoat and flashy silver shoes. And the whole audience on the first floor was dancing like crazy as he opened with "Waiting For The End Of The World." The people in the balcony would have jumped around too, but if somebody way up top would have slipped, it probably would have caused a human avalanche! So we played it safe and sat while the band raced through exciting renditions of "Oliver's Army" and "Accidents Will Happen" from the new Armed Forces album.
The show built to a climax as the band played a dramatic extended version of "Watching The Detectives," enhanced by the surprisingly elaborate stage lighting. And after what seemed like an eternity of cheering and applause, the band returned to "Pump It Up" in a raucous encore.
