Elvis Costello's style is getting better and better

Elvis Costello And The Attractions / Trust

Like any Costello record, this one takes some getting used to: It mixes the pop sheen and the abrasive rock styles perfected in Armed Forces and This Year's Model, continues his fascination with politicized sexuality and sensuous politics and works in hints of the soul music of Get Happy! Which probably means it's his best, or at least most consistent, record. If anything, though, it's most impressive because in a time of few listenable singers, Costello's vocal expertise continues to develop and mature so that he's virtually crooning on the best tracks here.
