The fact that still-young Elvis Costello (nee Declan McManus) has already traveled so far in his distinguished career, having put out 13 LPs and recorded with colleagues as disparate as Chet Baker and George Jones, makes it hard to remember that he was once considered a "punk rocker." Now that his transition from angry young man to moody crooner is complete, it seems an opportune time to take stock. This may or may not be the reasoning behind this week's peculiar but intriguing series of Costello concerts: three different shows in three nights. Sunday he'll be with the Confederates — more or less the lineup that appeared on last year's King of America. Monday will feature Costello's longtime backup group, the Attractions, with the set order to be determined by the "Spinning Song Book" — a big wheel with 40 song titles on it, spun by audience members. Costello will perform again with the Attractions on Tuesday, featuring tunes from his new album, Blood and Chocolate. Sunday through Tuesday, 8 PM, Riviera Night Club, 4750 N. Broadway; 769-6300.
