Punch The Clock

Elvis Costello

E. Davis

Another Elvis Costello album ... Punch The Clock is his oh, tenth release in say, six years and once again proves his lyrical and melodic talents as well as his productive capabilities. "In four or five paragraphs / All your compliments and cutting remarks / Are captured here in my quotation marks..." Cuts like "Everyday I Write The Book" and "The Invisible Man" have already become familiar Elvis standbys. Not angry, not blue, this is a very boppy album. It is also a very unremarkable album in terms of the guy's talent. Less gut than his earlier stuff and minus the feeling of Imperial Bedroom, one gets the impression of spinning wheels... Punch the Clock may be a product of just that, but it will grow on Elvis fans.
