Versatile Elvis Costello takes the country road

Mary J. Murphy

Our contemporaries would include amongst their number those who adored Elvis Costello and the Attractions at a time when he was making records like "Alison" and "Oliver's Army." Never one of my absolute favourites but certainly thereabouts on the outer edges, it's more than interesting to read nowadays that he's just made a new country CD in Nashville, in three days. Called Secret, Profane and Sugarcane, it's got Emmylou on there doing harmony, as well as the mighty Loretta Lynn who appears on the album as both a singer and a co-writer of one of the songs, "I Felt The Chill Before The Winter Came."

Costello's band on the record is called The Sugarcanes and include in its line up chaps like dobro maestro, Jerry Douglas; Stuart Duncan on fiddle; Jeff Taylor playing accordion, bass guitarist Dennis Crouch and Mike Compton on mandolin. The album has received the imprimatur of none other than T Bone Burnett who was actually its producer. It's due out in early June and keep an eye peeled for a short series of tour dates penned in for June and August.

Apparently it's a roots-oriented album, whatever the heck that means but we can kind of guess its musical leanings when we see names attached to the sleeve like Emmylou and T Bone, a duo that don't appear to be drawn to the more poppified country genre as espoused by Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Keith Urban and that commercially successful bunch. Costello likes to run with a more 'Alt' crowd which doesn't mean that he's a musical snob, just that he has his cut-off point, past which he doesn't intend to go.
