Una rinnovata eterogeneità creativa per il cantautore britannico con l’album "Hey clockface", realizzato tra Helsinki, Parigi, New York e Los Angeles

Non ha raggiunto i livelli di Bowie come eclettismo, ma è certo che Elvis Costello ama cambiare e proporsi come cantautore eclettico. Così nel suo cospicuo catalogo si può trovare di tutto: dal reggae al country, dal pop più puro alla new wave, dal rock scatenato degli Attractions (e degli eredi Imposters) ai mottetti classici con il Brodsky Quartet. Hey clockface non appartiene a nessuno di questi schemi: realizzato tra Helsinki, Parigi, New York e Los Angeles con ensemble riuniti dal fido Steve Nieve, vede l’artista passare dalle atmosfere rumoriste care a Tom Waits di No flag, We are all cowards now e Hetty O’Hara confidential alle ballate struggenti come They’re not laughing at me now, The whirlwind, The last confession of Vivian Whip, What is it that I need that I don’t already have? e I can’t say her name, alla narrativa di Revolution #49, Newspaper pane e Radio is everything dove parla più che cantare, ad I do che nasce per sembrare uno standard jazz degli anni Quaranta che non sarebbe dispiaciuto a Billie Holiday, mentre Hey clockface / How can you face me? guarda ancora più indietro (sarebbe stata perfetta per Al Jolson) e I can’t say her name urla Armstrong. Il filo conduttore? Costello sarà sempre «impop», troppo intelligente, troppo raffinato per essere solo «pop», ma per chi sa apprezzare questo scrittore unico e interprete inconfondibile, qui c’è molto da ascoltare.
